Business Correspondence

The course aims to teach students how to write effective business letters in English. It will begin by analyzing standard business letters and their structure and then we will focus on two major types of business letters, complaint and request.

We will cover the following topics:

  • Letter structure including address, forms of address, introduction, body, conclusion and closing greeting.
  • Letter register: using appropriate language
  • Contextual use of grammar, e.g., using conditional form to achieve appropriate tone.
  • Common language structures, e.g., apologizing in reply to a complaint.

The course will focus on writing, offering many opportunities for practice. We will discuss your letters in class. For future letters, course participants will be able to use a handout packet that includes a range of model letters and a Czech-English glossary with useful phrases and expressions.
